Country:Armenia
Arshak Sarkissian lives and works between Yerevan and London. He was born and raised in Gyumri, Armenia’s second city, which was tragically devastated by the 1988 earthquake. Growing up during the end of the Soviet era and witnessing Armenia’s complex transition to independence has influenced his artistic vision. Sarkissian’s work aims to reconcile the spirit of the classical world with contemporary themes, creating a unique fusion that reflects his heritage and the modern world.
Sarkissian’s art features a gallery of characters and imaginary creatures inspired by the rites and beliefs of Armenian popular tradition. Through painting, graphic art, and installations, he translates these cultural elements into a visual language that resonates with both historical depth and current relevance.
Since his first solo exhibition in 1998 at the National Center of Aesthetics named after Henry Igityan in Yerevan, his work has been showcased in esteemed galleries such as the Albemarle Gallery in London, the Gavriel Gallery in Bremen, the Midlberry Gallery in Moscow and the Vendôme gallery in New York. His art has also been exhibited in international museums, including the Ljubljana Museum of Modern Art and Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia.
Sarkissian has been honored with the prestigious Anthology Prize in London and was named the best young Armenian artist by the Presidential Prize in 2005. His recent projects include site-specific installations at the Prague Quadrennial, the Gyumri International Biennale and the Pharos Contemporary Center in Cyprus. He was also commissioned to create a piece for the Passenger Terminal at Zvartnots Airport in Armenia.
